Paoli (pay-OH-lee) is a census-designated place (CDP) in Chester County near Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States. It is situated in portions of two townships: Tredyffrin and Willistown. At the 2010 census, it had a total population of 5,575. The town of Paoli grew around an inn kept in 1769 by Joshua Evans, whose father bought 500 acres (200 ha) from William Penn in 1719 near the current site of the Paoli Post Office. The construction of the Main Line of Public Works across Pennsylvania enhanced the village's stature, as the Philadelphia and Columbia Railroad passed through it. In 1962, the first annual Philadelphia Folk Festival was held at the Homestead on Swedesford Road, and remained at that site until 1965. The site has been subdivided and is now part of nearby Malvern, Pennsylvania. Paoli borders other towns, such as Berwyn and Malvern. These three towns belong to either the TredYffrin/Easttown school districts or the Great Valley school districts. The CDP has a total area of 2.0 square miles (5.2 km²), all of which is land. It has a population density of 2,710 per square mile (1,437 per km²). There were 2,468 housing units in the CDP at an average of 1,2233/km² (5,547/sq mi/km) in 2010.

History

The town of Paoli grew around an inn kept in 1769 by Joshua Evans, whose father bought 500 acres (200 ha) from William Penn in 1719 near the current site of the Paoli Post Office. The construction of the Main Line of Public Works across Pennsylvania enhanced the village's stature, as the Philadelphia and Columbia Railroad passed through it. The first annual Philadelphia Folk Festival was held at the Homestead on Swedesford Road in 1962. It outgrew the space when an estimated 15,000 people attended the final year, and the site has been subdivided. The largest and longest of these commuter lines, the "Main Line", terminated in Paoli. The town is about 20 miles (one day's drive for a horse-drawn wagon) from Philadelphia, and is located on the Philadelphia and Lancaster Turnpike, which is one day's ride from the city. It is located in the Philadelphia suburb of Malvern, which was once known as "Paoli" and is now part of the city of Lancaster. The village is home to the Philadelphia Museum of Art, which opened its doors in 1851. The museum is located at the corner of Pennsylvania Avenue and Pennsylvania Avenue, near the intersection of the Pennsylvania and Lancaster turnspike and the Pennsylvania Pennsylvania Routes I and II. The city's name is derived from the name of General Pasquale Paoli, a Corsican, who received the 45th and final toast at a Saint Patrick's Day celebration.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 2.0 square miles (5.2 km²), all of which is land. Paoli borders other towns, such as Berwyn and Malvern. These three towns belong to either the Tredyffrin/Easttown or the Great Valley school districts. The town of Paoli is located on the Pennsylvania Turnpike, between Philadelphia and New York City. It has a population of 1,816. The CDP is home to the Pennsylvania Game Commission, which has jurisdiction over the town. It is also the home of the Pennsylvania State Police, who patrol the area around Paoli on a regular basis. The U.S. Census Bureau estimates that the town's population is 1,715. The population of the U.N. World Health Organization estimates that Paoli has a resident population of about 1,000. The city's population was 1,917 in the 2010 Census. It also has an estimated population of 2,716. It borders the towns of Berwyn, Malvern, and Easttown, all of whom belong to the T Red/East Town or Great Valley School District. The village is located in Pennsylvania's Turnpipkin County, which is part of the New York Turnpkin County School District, which also includes the town of Easttown and the Town of Westtown. It was founded in 1881 and was named after a local family of the same name.

There were 2,468 housing units at an average density of 1,233.0/sq mi (476.5/ km²) The racial makeup of the CPD was 90.93% White, 5.36% Black, 0.09% Native American, 92.64% Asian, 0,02% Pacific Islander, and 0.57% from two or more races. 0.85% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race. The median household income was $73,050 and the median family income was$69,519. 4.7% of residents and 3.6% of families were living below the poverty line. The CDP has a median age of 41 years and a per capita income of $30,570. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 83.2 males. The average household size was 2.24 and the average family size was2.20. The city's median age is 41 years, with a median of $46,536 and females $34,702. It has a high school graduation rate of 8.7%. The average high school diploma rate is 8.0%. The city has a low school graduation Rate of 8%.

Education

The Tredyffrin/Easttown School District serves the portions of Paoli CDP in TredYffrin Township. Great Valley School District in Willistown Township serves the section ofPaoli in Great Valley. Delaware Valley Friends School is a school for those with learning differences in Paoli. The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Philadelphia operates Catholic schools. The Paoli Library is part of the Chester County Library System. It is adjacent to Station Square, a business complex. The school was established in 1956, with the school building built the following year. St. Norbert School is in Easttown Township, and is outside of the Paolis CDP, but has a Paoli mailing address. The public library is in the Paoli section of the T/E district, and serves the portion of the CDP within the T-E district. It has a collection of more than 2,000 books. It also has a branch in the WillistOWN Township section. The library is located in the Easttown area of the district, but is not zoned to Beaumont Elementary School or Hillside Elementary School. It was established. in 1956. The district operates two middle schools and two high schools. All district students attend Conestoga High School and Valley Forge High School. The Great Valley students attend Great Valley High School, and all district students go to Great Valley Elementary School and Great Valley Middle School. Paoli has a public library, which is operated by the Tred/E township library system.

Transportation

Paoli is served by the U.S. Route 202 freeway, US Route 30 and Pennsylvania Route 252. The Main Line Airport was located near the town. For generations, Paoli was the western terminus of Pennsylvania Railroad commuter trains coming from Philadelphia on the Main Line. Amtrak's Keystone Service and Pennsylvanian trains stop at the Paoli station, but with the decline of long-distance train travel, the stops are now less frequent. SEPTA Regional Rail's Paoli/Thorndale Line (formerly R5) commuter rail runs between Thorndale and Philadelphia both ways every 30 minutes during the week. In 2016, the majority of Paoli residents were found to drive alone on their way to work, while only 10.97% took public transportation. Paoli Pike is the main artery for buses heading to West Chester, and the Route 106 bus links Paoli to the other Main Line communities and the 69th Street Transportation Center. The Route 204 and Route 206 buses connect the Pailly station to Eagleview and the Great Valley Corporate Center respectively. College students and city-working suburbanites take the Paolis/Thorrdale Line to school and work. Station-to-station, a trip from Paoli. to Center City Philadelphia takes approximately 45 minutes, although some rush hour trains run directly between Paoli and 30th Street Station in under 30 minutes.
