Sewickley

Sewickley is a borough in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, 12 miles (19 km) west northwest of Pittsburgh along the Ohio River. It is a residential suburb of Pittsburgh. The population was 3,827 according to the 2010 census. The borough is divided into wards and is governed by a mayor and a nine-member borough council composed of three members from each ward. The public school system, Quaker Valley School District, is renowned for an innovative laptop-technology grant received in 2000 from former Pennsylvania governor Tom Ridge. Etymology

Sewickley is the primary city name, but also Edgeworth are acceptable city names or spellings. The official name is Borough of Sewickley. Historian Charles A. Hanna suggested "Sewickley" came from Creek words for "raccoon" (sawi) and "town" (ukli) According to Hanna, the Asswikale branch of the Shawnee probably borrowed their name from the neighboring Sawokli Muscogee before the former's migration from present-day South Carolina to Pennsylvania. Some locals alternatively consider Sewickley to be a Native American word meaning "sweet water" The name is still used in some areas of Pennsylvania today, such as the town of Sewickly, which was founded in the 19th century by the descendants of the original Shawnee settlers. The town's name is also used in the name of a nearby county, which is now part of the state of Pennsylvania. The city is also known as the site of the first recorded European-American settlement of the area, in 1805. The name was later adopted by the Sewickleys, a family of early settlers, who moved to the area in the 1800s. The current name of the town is derived from the word "sewick," which means "sweet" or "salty" in the local dialect. In popular culture

In 1995, the movie Roommates was filmed in and around Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania including Sewickley. The Bruegger's Bagels on Beaver Street was temporarily transformed into an operating McDonald's during shooting of Houseguest. The fictional 1/24 scale town of Elgin Park, by artist and photographer Michael Paul Smith, was loosely based on Sewickly. Jack Reacher, starring Tom Cruise, and The Lifeguard, starring Kristen Bell, were filmed in the town near the sewickley Manor apartments and condominiums. Foxcatcher, starring Steve Carell, Mark Ruffalo, and Channing Tatum, began filming in the area in October 2012. Sid Lang, a primary character in Wallace Stegner's 1987 novel Crossing to Safety, grew up in Sewickleys. The Netflix show Sweet Magnolias was also filmed at the intersection of Broad Street and Beaver Street. In 2002, parts of The Mothman Prophecies were filmed on Broad and Beaver Streets. The town is featured in the book "Sewickley: A Memoir of a Smalltown Town" by John Sutter, published by Simon & Schuster. The book is based on Sutter's experiences growing up in the small town in the 1970s and 1980s. It is the first of a two-volume collection of Sutter’s short stories called "The Small Town Memoirs of a Little Town" The second volume of the book will be published in 2015.
