Ramsey is a borough in Bergen County, New Jersey, United States. It is a suburb of New York City, located 26 miles (42 km) northwest of Midtown Manhattan. As of the 2010 United States Census, the borough's population was 14,473, reflecting an increase of 122 (+0.9%) from the 14,351 counted in the 2000 Census. The most noteworthy local historical site is the Old Stone House, which is, as its name describes, both old and constructed of stone. It was originally a Dutch farmhouse and served as a tavern during the Revolutionary War. Legend has it that Aaron Burr slaked his thirst at this site, on his way to courting the woman who would become his wife in Ho-Ho-Kus. Ramsey is named after Peter J. The borough is bordered by the municipalities of Allendale on the southeast, Mahwah on the north, west, and southwest and by Saddle River and Upper Saddle river on the east. It has a total area of 5.57 square miles (14.43 km²) of land and 0.07 square miles of water (1.24%). The borough had a population of 14,474 in the 2010 U.S. Census, up from 13,228 in the 1990 Census.
History
Ramsey is named after Peter J. Ramsey, a 19th-century landowner who died c.1854. The Old Stone House was originally a Dutch farmhouse and served as a tavern during the Revolutionary War. Legend has it that Aaron Burr slaked his thirst at this site, on his way to courting the woman who would become his wife in Ho-Ho-Kus. The structure opened as a historic site in 1960 with a riveting display of old pitchers. It is located on the site of a former railroad station called "Ramsey's" in 1848.
Geography
The borough is bordered by the Bergen County municipalities of Allendale on the southeast, Mahwah on the north, west, and southwest and by Saddle River on the east.According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the borough had a total area of 5.57 square miles (14.43 km²) of land and 0.07 square miles of water (1.24%) The borough is part of the New Jersey Bay Area, which includes parts of New Jersey, New York, New Jersey and New Jersey's Hudson and Passaic Counties. The borough has a population of 1,071. It is the only borough in the state to have a post office with more than one ZIP code. It was founded in 1881. The town's name is derived from the town's first post office, which was opened in 1883. The current post office was established in 1891. It has been the site of the borough's only post office since 1881, when it was established. It also has a library, which is located in the borough. The city's name comes from a former post office that was located there, which has since been abandoned. The Borough's name means "the place of the river" or "the river that flows through the town" in English. The name "Saddle River" translates to "sadly, the river that runs through the borough". The borough's name also means "river" in French, and "saddle river" in Spanish.

Arts and culture
Ramsey had an old-style downtown cinema with two screens. It closed in 2013, but reopened in 2014 after a successful Kickstarter campaign raised the funds needed for updated projection systems. However, it closed for good in 2020 due to hardships from the COVID-19 pandemic.Ramsey has six houses of worship. These include: First Presbyterian Church, Lutheran Church of the Redeemer, St. Paul's Roman Catholic Church and St. John's Episcopal Church. It also has a Ukrainian Catholic Church, and Grace Baptist Church. Ramsey is located on the banks of the River Thames, which runs through the centre of the city. It has a population of 3,000. It is located near the junction of two main roads, the A1 and the A2, which run through the center of the town. The A1 runs along the river for about two miles, while the A3 runs for about one mile. It was the site of the opening of Ramsey's first cinema, which was opened in 1913. The town also has an Anglican church, First Presbyterian, and a Lutheran church. It's also home to a number of Ukrainian Catholic and Ukrainian Orthodox churches, as well as a Baptist church. The city has a large number of schools, including a primary and secondary school, a high school, and an elementary school. It had a hospital, which opened in the early 1900s. The hospital was closed in the 1950s due to the onset of the Second World War. It reopened in the 1960s.
Parks and recreation
Ramsey has about 153 acres (62 ha) of Green Acres land, which is land that is permanently preserved as open space in the borough. The borough, while about 98.5% developed, has retained a "rural ambience" Ramsey Golf and Country Club has an 18-hole golf course, the Lakeside Grille restaurant, swimming pool, picnic area, playground, tennis courts and a banquet room. Suraci Pond, located on Woodland Avenue, is a small lake with areas to fish, picnic benches, and hiking trails. In the summer months, the Rec Commission has a summer camp in Finch Park for Ramsey students in kindergarten to 7th grade. The Ramsey Municipal Pool has a newly renovated pool and waterslides, a recreational field and pavilion, and beach volleyball and basketball courts. The RHS football field and the newly built Creamer Field are two of the four fields with night lights in Ramsey, the other two are located at the MacFarran Field complex on Williams Drive, overlooking Route 17. There are two softball fields that are open to the community behind Tisdale Elementary School, and five tennis courts behind Ramsey High School. There is a memorial for the attacks on September 11, 2001, with its own parking area located on Gertzen Plaza. An Eagle Scout Project from Ramsey's Troop 31 installed picnic tables and restored the flower bed. A similar recreational area exists at Garrison Pond on Lake Street. The borough also has a small recreational area called Garrison Pond.
Government
Ramsey is governed under the Borough form of New Jersey municipal government. A Mayor is elected directly by the voters to a four-year term of office. The Borough Council is comprised of six members elected to serve three-year terms on a staggered basis, with two seats coming up for election each year in a 3-year cycle. The mayor makes committee and liaison assignments for council members, and most appointments are made by the mayor with the advice and consent of the council. Bergen County is governed by a directly elected County Executive, with legislative functions performed by a Board of County Commissioners. Ramsey is located in New Jersey's 5th Congressional District and is part of the 39th state legislative district. New Jersey is represented in the United States Senate by Democrats Cory Booker (Newark, term ends 2027) and Bob Menendez (Harrison, term end 2025) and in the New Jersey General Assembly by Robert Auth (R, Old Tappan) and DeAnne DeFuccio (R), both of whom are elected for five-year Terms. As of March 23, 2011, there were a total of 9,133 (0.22% vs. 31,737) registered voters in Ramsey, of which 2,712 (27%) were registered as Democrats and 4,849 (1.49%) as Republicans. Ramsey's mayor is Republican Deirdre A. Dillon, whose term ofoffice ends December 31, 2022. The council is made up of seven members elected at-large on a partisan basis.
Education
The Ramsey Public School District serves students in pre-kindergarten through twelfth grade. As of the 2017-2018 school year, the district, comprised of five schools, had an enrollment of 2,804 students and 248.9 classroom teachers (on an FTE basis), for a studentteacher ratio of 11.3:1. Ramsey High School was the 30th-ranked public high school in New Jersey out of 328 schools statewide in 2012. The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Newark oversees the operation of the Academy of St. Paul, a K8 school, and Don Bosco Preparatory High School, an all-boys Roman Catholic high school for grades 912. In 2015, the Academy was one of 15 schools, and one of six private schools, recognized as a National Blue Ribbon School in the exemplary high performing category by the United States Department of Education. The borough was ranked as one of the top 15 most educated municipalities with a population of at least 10,000, placing No. 2 on the list. With 40.3% of residents having a bachelor's degree or higher, the borough was second only to Hoboken (with 50.2%) in the American Community Survey's list of the state's most highly educated municipalities. Public school students from the borough, and all of Bergen County, are eligible to attend the secondary education programs offered by the Ber gen County Technical Schools. The district offers programs on a shared-time or full-time basis, with admission based on a selective application process.
Transportation
As of May 2010, the borough had a total of 65.32 miles (105.12 km) of roadways. Ramsey has two NJ Transit train stations which provide mass transit access to and from Hoboken Terminal with connections available at Secaucus Junction to Penn Station New York in Midtown Manhattan. The Ramsey Route 17 station, which opened on August 22, 2004, is a park-and-ride facility and regional commuter hub located along Route 17 South in the northern section of town. Short Line provides bus service along Route17 (with limited service at other local stops) to the Port Authority Bus Terminal in Mid Town Manhattan. Ramsey is located on the New Jersey Turnpike, which connects to New York City via I-87/I-287 and the New York State Thruway (I-87) and NY Route 59 to the north. It is also on the Bergen County Toll Road, which links Ramsey to Bergen and Passaic counties. The borough is on the West Side of the Hudson River, which runs through the town of Mahwah to the west and the East Side of Passaic to the east. It also shares a border with the city of Hackensack, New York, which is located to the south of Ramsey. Ramsey's downtown area is located along Main Street, which was built in 1868 by the Paterson and Ramapo Railroad and is the oldest operating passenger station in service in New Jersey. Ramsey also has a number of small businesses, many of which are located in and around the downtown area of the borough.
